Understand the buyer and contract
- Confirm who is named as buyer in the agreement.
- Ask who will handle the closing and funds.
- Read inspection, financing, assignment, and cancellation provisions if present.
- Check deadlines and what each party must complete.
Compare net proceeds
Request an explanation of any fees, closing costs, or deductions. A mortgage payoff, unpaid taxes, liens, or other property obligations may reduce the amount you receive. Ask for an estimate from the closing professional before closing.
Agree on dates and possession
Clarify the closing date, when funds are expected to be available, when possession transfers, and what happens if a delay occurs. If you need additional time to move, discuss it before signing.
Take time to review
Ask questions about anything unclear. If you want independent help, have an appropriate professional review the agreement. A written offer should give you enough information to decide whether the sale meets your goals.
